ReFuse is proud to play a crucial role in the implementation of SUNNY Project for the years 2024-2027. With a focus on creating a circular economy, ReFuse aims to tackle the challenges of waste management by rethinking how we handle materials, from production to disposal.
SUNNY, involving 18 partners from 3 African, 5 European, and 2 associated countries, aims to deliver highly replicable green energy solutions for Africa. It will enhance five Renewable Energy Technologies, adapted to local contexts and demonstrated in Uganda and Rwanda, benefiting around 1,300 refugees and host communities. The SUNNY project will implement solar home systems, clean hydrogen and biogas cooking solutions, refrigerated food storage, and smart solar irrigation to promote economic activity and sustainable development.
Yet, the project emphasizes local value creation, cost-effectiveness, adapted business models, social innovation, and knowledge-transfer. As well as environmental sustainability! And that’s where we’ll play our role.
ReFuse’s involvement in SUNNY includes a wide range of activities:
Mapping Local Waste Flows: We are working with CTEN to analyze local waste patterns and create a more efficient biowaste management system. This system is closely linked to a biogas facility, turning waste into a valuable resource for energy production.
Drafting KPIs for Eco-Design: ReFuse is helping to establish key performance indicators for eco-friendly waste management solutions, ensuring that sustainability is built into every stage of the process.
Organizing Circularity Workshops: These workshops bring together stakeholders from various sectors, including businesses and local communities, to explore how recyclable and biodegradable materials can be reintegrated into productive systems. The goal is to create livelihood opportunities while reducing waste.
Support for Biogas Digesters: ReFuse is providing technical assistance to ensure that biodegradable waste is efficiently processed in biogas digesters, contributing to renewable energy production.
Developing local waste value chains: ReFuse will connect stakeholders including community members, private recyclers, industries, community organizations to promote sorting and recycling in extremely isolated settings, building local empowerment opportunities out of waste.
We haven’t given up on our testing solutions in displacement settings. Did you know that, when ReFuse was created, its original name was “Refugees For Reuse”?
